Lall received a Bachelor of Science degree from Delhi University in 1954. Five years later he earned his Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree from Boston University. In 1962, Abner was given a Master of Science degree from Syracuse University. Also in 1971, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Maryland.
Lall began his career as a research associate at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in 1962. Ten years later he took a position of an assistant professor of biology at City College of New York. Then in 1974, Abner became a fellow at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1975, he was appointed a consultant at Behavioral Technology, Inc. Also Lall worked as a senior research associate of the physiology and biophysics department at Howard University from 1976 to 1977.
In 1977, he became a visiting assistant professor of biology at Skidmore College. In 1979, Abner held a position of a researcher at Johns Hopkins University. Then in 1988, he became a professor of biology at Howard University, where he worked until his retirement as a professor emeritus in 2011.
Lall is a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Society for Neuroscience and Sigma Xi.
