He served Shogun Yoriie Minamoto.Through the influence of his father, Morinaga, he was given an important post in the Shogunate. Yoriie once sought to kill Kagemori because of his affair with a concubine of the Shogun but gave up the plan at the advice of Masako Hojo, his mother. In 1218, Kagemori was appointed Lord of Dewa Province and Lord of Akita Castle in northeastern Japan. The following year, at the death of Sanetomo Minamoto, he was so grieved that he retired to Koya Temple and became a priest, the people calling him Koya Nyudo.
