Adams William was born at 24 September 1564.
He participated in the battle with the Spanish Armada as commander of the battle-ship Richard Duflicld. Later entered the service of Dutch Rotterdam Company and was sent to the Far East as chief navigator of the flotilla of five trading ships. Arrived in Bungo (Kyushu)(1600) and joined the services of hogun leyasu Tokugawa, whom he taught geometry, navigation, ship-building and other West¬ern sciences. He presented the Shogun with two ships and in return was given a manor at Miura Peninsula (Kanagawa Prefecture) and another residence in Nihonbashi, Ye- do.
