Aderanti Adepoju gained a Bachelor of Science degree (with honors) at the University of Ife, Nigeria in 1969. Then he received a Master of Science degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1970. He also gained a Doctor of Philosophy degree at London School of Economics and Political Science in 1973.
Aderanti Adepoju began his career as a lecturer, then he became a professor at the University of Ife, Ife, Nigeria in 1969-1984. During that time he was also reg. advisor of International Labor Organization, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1977-1978. From 1984 till 1990 he served as professor and dean at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Then he became a training coordinator for United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dakar, Senegal in 1988-1998.

Aderanti was a member (president) of Union for African Population Studies in 1991-1995. He was also a member of the International Sociological Association, Population Association Nigeria, World Social Prospects Association, Nigeria Economic Society, International Association Survey Statisticians, International Union for Science Study of Population, National Academy of Sciences (population committee).
Aderanti married Adinda Adeyemi on November 25, 1972. They have 4 children: Abiola, Adegboyega, Aboyepe, Adegoke.
