Studied at Tokyo Kaisei College. Naval College at the Time of Tokugawa.
Entered the Imperial Japanese Navy, 186S. Lieutenant-Commander, 1872. Commanded the Adzuma (Ex Stonewall Jackson), Nisshin, Fuso, and Hiyei in succession.
Took part in the Civil War of 1877 in command of Nisshin, and with Hiyei went to Persian Gulf, 1880. Promoted to Captain, 1882.
Brought the Naniwa home from England.

RearAdmiral and Commander of the Standing Squadron, 1886. Vice-Admiral and Chief of Yokosuka Naval Station, 1892. Fought the battle of Yalu with all the combined squadrons under command, 1894.

Created Viscount and invested with the First Order of the Rising Sun, and Second Order of the Golden Kite, et cetera, for services in the war. Admiral, 1898; Count, 1907.
