The first stone structure erected at the West 13th Street site, known as Guild Hall, was constructed from May 1888 through March of 1890. It was designed by two brothers, Adriance Van Brunt (1836–1913) and John Van Brunt (1854–1924), who had founded an architectural firm known as A. Van Brunt and Company in Kansas City in 1883.
Adriance Van Brunt was born in 1836 in Englewood, New Jersey, United States.
He was educated at the old Latin School in Boston, and in 1854 graduated at Harvard College.
Following the close of the Civil War in which he saw action with the 22nd New Jersey Infantry Regiment, Van Brunt returned to his native city and began architectural practice under his own name. Later in 1878 he moved to Kansas City and in associated with his brother John designed a large number of residences, and during one period they served as Architects for the Kansas City Park Board.
