Adrienne Kaeppler was born on July 26, 1935, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. She is a daughter of Bernard and Laura Leonora (Tews) Kaeppler.
Adrienne Kaeppler studied at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee from 1956 to 1958. She also attended the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959, a Master of Arts in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1967.
Adrienne L. Kaeppler started her career as an assistant at Bishop Museum in 1962. In 1967 she became an assistant professor of music and anthropology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She also worked as a professor at the University of Maryland, the Queen’s University in Belfast, Johns Hopkins University; and the University of California. Kaeppler is currently Curator of Oceanic Ethnology at the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution. She is working on several projects associated with barkcloth (textiles made from the inner bark of certain trees) in museum collections and its present-day resurgence as Pacific Art.
Adrienne L. Kaeppler published her first book, "Artificial Curiosities" in 1978. She also wrote such books as "The Pacific Arts of Polynesia and Micronesia", "Holophusicon: The Leverian Museum: An Eighteenth-Century English Institution of Science, Curiosity, and Art". One of her latest books is "The Iconic Tattooed Man of Easter Island, an Illustrated Life", that was published in 2018. She also wrote articles for Journal of Museum Ethnography, Pacific Arts and Journal of the Polynesian Society.
