He was born in 1925, in Chinguetti, northern Mauritania, in a Moorish cattle breeder’s family.

Educated at Medersa Koranic School and by correspondence courses before going to the French Overseas Istitute for Higher Studies in Paris until 1958.
When he returned home to became The Chef of the Cabinet in the Ministry of Interior. In 1960 he became the Commandant of the Tagnant area. After independence, he was appointed a minister almost iminediately, being given the Construction and public works portfolio by the President Moktar Ould Daddah. He was Minister of Justice and Interior in 1966 went over full time the Mauritanian Peoples’ Party as secretary in the Political Bureau. In 1971 he became Secretary for Political, Legal and Administrative Studies and President of the Supreme Court. He was brought back into government as Minister of the Interior in the cabinet reshuffle of December 1972.
