Akaiwa Hachiro was born in 1881 in Komatsushima, Tokushima.
He graduated from Kyoto University (1907), won a doctorate (1917), and studied in Europe and America (1917-20).
He successively served as chief physician of the Aomori Prefectural Hospital, professor at the Okayama Moaical College, professor at Kyushu University Medical Department and chief physician of the hospital attached to Kyushu University. He resigned from Kyusnu University in 1941, becoming a professor emeritus. He is now chief physician at the Tobata Hospital which is run by the Japan Seamen Relief Association. He is a member both of the Japan Surgeons' Association and of the Japan Orthopedists’ Association
