A retainer of the Matsushiro Clan in Nagano Prefecture. Although he was trusted by his lord, Yukitsura Sanada, he was put under house arrest on a certain false charge. While in confinement, he was devoted to writing. After ten year’s confinement, he was pardoned and devoted himself to a proimperialist campaign. After the Restoration in 1868, he served in the Imperial Government. After resigning he became adviser to the Sanada family.
