He worked his way through college, and started composing Haiku poems while working with the Yokohama Maritime Fire Insurance Co. He was imprisoned in 1941 because of his poetical activities which it was considered deviated from the line of the national policy of the wartime government. After the war’s end, he joined the poets' group “Heavenly Wolves (Tenro)” and was secretary-general of the Contemporary Haiku Society.
