Kawamura received a Bachelor of Laws degree from Kyoto University in 1965.
Kawamura has been an outside director at McDonald's Holdings Company, Ltd since 2002. In 2004, he became a lecturer at Graduate School of Law of Chuo Univeristy, where he worked until 2006. Since 2005 Akira has been working as a registered arbitrator at China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission. In 2007, he became a member of the Ethics Committee of the Japanese Cancer Association and had held the position for ten years.
Since 2013 Kawamura has been President of Japan Association of Arbitrators. Also since 2014 he has served as a member of the Ethics Commission of the International Association of Athletics Federation. Since 2016 Akira has been working as a co-chairman at Russia Japan Lawyers Council. Since 2017 Akira is a member of Disciplinary Tribunal of the Association of Athletics Federation. In addition, since 2018 he has been a director of Japan International Dispute Settlement Center. Kawamura is the of counsel at Anderson Mori & Tomotsune. He is a former president of the International Bar Association.
Kawamura is a member of Daini Tokyo Bar Association, International Bar Association, Japan Association of Arbitrators and Russia-Japan Lawyers Council.
On November 10, 1968 Akira Kawamura married Masako Kodama Kawamura. They have two children.
