Akira Yamagata was born in 1896, in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
In 1919, Akira Yamagata graduated from Commercial Department of Waseda University.
In 1919, Akira Yamagata entered Mogi Gomei Kaisha (Unlimited Partnership Company) and then served at Nansho Yoko (Nanchang Hong or Nanchang Firm) (from 1920). In 1922, he entered Naigai Tsushinsha (Naigai News Agency) and Hakuho-do, and in 1923 he became its managing director. In 1936, Yamagata became a senior managing director of Nihon Sugar Industry Company.
Later he held executive posts in Ensuiko Pulp Industry Company, Hokuman Sangyo Kaisha (North Manchuria Industrial Company), Abe-ko Company and became a president of Nihon Sugar Industry Company in 1945. With founding of Ensuiko Warehouse Company in 1950, he was appointed its president. The same year renamed the company Ensuiko Sugar Refining Company and continued as a president.
