Akiva Goldsman was born on July 7, 1962 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of Tev Goldsman, a therapist, and Mira Rothenberg, a child psychologist. His parents ran a group home for emotionally disturbed children.
Raised in Brooklyn Heights, New York, Akiva Goldsman received his bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University and attended the graduate fiction writing program at New York University.
Akiva Goldsman began working as a screenwriter following an initial career working with severely troubled or autistic children. His first produced screenplay was "Silent Fall", appearing in 1994 and directed by the Australian emigre Bruce Beresford.
This project was followed in the same year by the very successful "The Client", based on the bestseller by John Grisham. "The Client" was the first of four feature films on which Goldsman collaborated with director Joel Schumacher, and all four were major summer movies, appearing in successive years. This creative duo’s entry for 1995 was "Batman Forever".
Goldsman and Schumacher returned to the Batman saga in 1997 with "Batman and Robin”. The film was “fantastic, if not particularly inspired, a logistical triumph for everyone involved." Between their two Batman ventures, Goldsman and Schumacher paired up for a second film based on a Grisham novel: "A Time to Kill", based on the lawyer-novelist’s first bestseller.
Goldsman next Hollywood venture was "Lost in Space", a 1998 summer blockbuster for which he served as both writer and producer. The movie is based on the 1960s television series, which in turn was “loosely modeled,” according to Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times, on the venerable children’s novel "The Swiss Family Robinson."
Goldsman appealed to producer Brian Grazer to write the screenplay for "A Beautiful Mind" and ultimately won an Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay. The star of "A Beautiful Mind", Russell Crowe, later invited Goldsman and director Ron Howard to film "Cinderella Man", and Goldsman wrote the film's screenplay. Goldsman has a production company at Warner Bros. called Weed Road Pictures.
Goldsman produced the Universal Pictures feature "Lone Survivor", from writer and director Peter Berg, based on the book "Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10" by Marcus Luttrell. The movie was released in 2013.
Goldsman made his feature film directing debut with "Winter's Tale", a film adaption of the Mark Helprin novel. Goldsman worked for seven years on developing the project with Warner Bros. Pictures, finally getting a green light on the script (which he wrote). The film was released on February 14, 2014. He also directed the horror thriller film "Stephanie" (2017), and co-wrote and produced the film adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series, which was released on August 4, 2017.
In June 2015, Paramount Pictures announced that Goldsman would head a team of writers and filmmakers to create a multifilm cinematic universe branching out from Hasbro's Transformers franchise. Goldsman was revealed in September 2018 to have been on the writing staff for the new "Star Trek" series revolving around the later years of the character of Jean-Luc Picard.
Akiva Goldsman has been one of the most successful screenwriters in Hollywood history. Since breaking into the business in 1991, Akiva has been a highly in demand. In 2002, Goldsman received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay for the 2001 film "A Beautiful Mind", which also won the Academy Award for Best Picture. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Akiva Goldsman has an estimated net worth of roughly $50 million, as of 2017.

Goldsman's second wife, film producer Rebecca Spikings-Goldsman, died of a heart attack on July 6, 2010, at the age of 42. Rebecca was the daughter of producer Barry Spikings. In 2012, Akiva met his third wife, model/actress/equestrian Joann Richter. They married in 2014. The couple has two daughters, and divide their time between Los Angeles and New York.
Rebecca Spikings-Goldsman (September 21, 1967 – July 6, 2010), who was widely credited as Rebecca Spikings, was an American film producer and filmmaker.
