Background
Akiyama Gyokuzan was born in 1703. He was the son of Yasukatsu Yamanaka, Lord of Higo Province (Kumamoto Prefecture), he was also called Giemon, as well as Shiu.

Adopted in the family of Juan Akiyama, a physician, he studied medicine and later Confucian literature. Became a disciple of Hoko Hayashi. Advised his lord to establish the Jishukan School.
