City College of the City University of New York (Bachelor of Arts, 1970). Cleveland Marshall College of Law (Juris Doctor, summa cum laude, 1973).
His acting career began with the New Irish Players in Killarney. He starred in many TV shows such as Ballykissangel and also starred alongside many internationally recognised film stars in many big Hollywood productions as well as independent productions and on stage in his beloved theatre. He is best known for his roles in Chekhov's The Seagull and Eugene O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten.
Alan was loved by everybody who knew him and was always a humble honest and funny gentleman, whether he was talking to Hollywood royalty or a street drinker. He understood & enjoyed talking to both but always had time and a kind word for the latter (who to many people are invisible or to be avoided) as Alan himself had bravely battled with alcoholism for many years, having experienced homelessness at his most difficult time. He died suddenly at his home in Dalkey, Dublin on 13 May 2011, but thanks to his incredible list of film credits (details to follow) he will never be forgotten.
