The Heeger family came to Sioux City (Iowa) from Belarus as Jewish immigrants in 1904 when Alan's father was a small boy (age 4). His mother was born in Omaha (Nebraska); she was a first generation child of Jewish immigrants.

He has long been interested in and a fan of theatre. Prof. Alan Heeger has participated in the production of 4 Broadway plays: "In the Heights", "West Side Story", "Barefoot in the Park" and "Cinderella".
He is married and has two sons.
