Alan I. Marcus was born on August 15, 1949, in Red Bank, New Jersey, United States. He is the son of Franklin and Eunice Marcus.
Marcus graduated from the University of Wisconsin— Madison with a bachelor's degree in 1972. He then received his master's degree and a doctorate from the University of Cincinnati in 1975 and 1979, respectively.
Marcus started his career as an assistant professor at the International Traning School in 1979. During that time, he also became an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati.
In 1980, Marcus joined Iowa States University, where he worked till 2017, first, as an assistant professor, then as an associate and since 1988, as a professor of history. During that period, he also held the position of director of the Center for Historical Studies of Technology and Science and director of the Graduate Program in the History of Technology and Science at the university.
Currently, Marcus works as a professor of history and head of the department at Mississippi State University.
