Shulman, a chubby, middle-aged stationery-store owner from New Jersey, has always claimed that he’s been gaining and losing the same thirty-five pounds since junior high–and that if you added all of that discarded weight together, he had lost an entire person. Another Shulman. A Shulman he never really cared for. A Shulman he’d always tried to lose by dieting and exercising. A Shulman he’d cover by wearing extra-large shirts in an attempt to hide his existence.

After the family spares him from the builders, Steve the tree quickly works his way into their lives. He holds their underwear when the dryer breaks down, he’s there when Adam and Lindsay get their first crushes, and he’s the centerpiece at their outdoor family parties. With a surprising lack of anthropomorphizing, this is a uniquely poignant celebration of fatherhood, families, love, and change.

In Clothing Optional, Alan Zweibel offers a collection of laugh-out-loud personal narratives, essays, short fiction, dialogues, and even a few whimsical drawings. Zweibel first made a name for himself as one of the original writers for Saturday Night Live, but his career’s humble beginnings included creating one-liners for Catskill comedians at seven dollars a pop. That experience is only one of the hysterically inspired anecdotes ("Comic Dialogue") in this quirky compilation.

One of them is a best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning humorist. The other is a winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor. Together, they form the League of Comic Justice, battling evildoers in the name of... Okay, we made that line up. What they do form is a writing team of pure comic genius, and they will have you laughing like idiots. Philip Horkman is a happy man - the owner of a pet store called The Wine Shop, and on Sundays a referee for kids' soccer. Jeffrey Peckerman is the sole sane person in a world filled with goddamned jerks and morons, and he's having a really bad day. The two of them are about to collide in a swiftly escalating series of events that will send them running for their lives, pursued by the police, soldiers, terrorists, subversives, bears, and a man dressed as Chuck E. Cheese. Where that all takes them you can't begin to guess, but the literary journey there is a masterpiece of inspiration and mayhem. But what else would you expect from the League of Comic Justice?

Actor playwright producer screenwriter author
Alan Zweibel was born on May 20, 1950 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He is a son of Julius and Shirley Zweibel. He grew up in the New York City suburbs of Wantagh and Woodmere on Long Island.
In 1968 Alan Zweibel graduated from George W. Hewlett High School and from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1972.
Alan Zweibel began his career as a writer for the hit television show Saturday Night Live (1975-1980, 1984, 1987). From there he moved on to write for other television series and specials, offBroadway plays, and screenplays. Zweibel's 1984 book North, the story of a nine-year-old boy who, feeling ignored by his workaholic parents, sets out to find a new set of parents who will truly appreciate him, was turned into a feature movie. The television series Zweibel created in 1986, It's Garry Shandling's Show, was a ratings smash and the show earned many awards. But it was Zweibel's relationship with actress Gilda Radner that helped make him a success. Zweibel met Radner when Saturday Night Live was first beginning rehearsals in July of 1975.
Zweibel's 1994 book Bunny Bunny: Gilda Radner, A Sort of Love Story was written as a way for Zweibel to achieve some sort of catharsis and closure after the death of Radner in 1991 from ovarian cancer. Bunny Bunny was first produced on the stage in 1994 on Broadway and starred Jason Alexander and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Zweibel and Radner.
In April of 2005, Zweibel published Our Tree Named Steve, his first children's book. Framed as a letter from a father to his children, Our Tree Named Steve explains how the family-named tree, a landmark of their front yard for most of their lives, was uprooted in a storm. He is also the author of Clothing Optional: And Other Ways to Read These Stories, From the Bottom Drawer of: Alan Zweibel, Lunatics, A Field Guide to the Jewish People.
Alan’s theatrical works include his collaboration with Billy Crystal on the Tony Award winning "700 Sundays." On the TV screen Alan has appeared in episodes of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Law & Order." His film credits include Dragnet, The Story of Us, and North, Here Today.
