Etzel was born on April 9, 1946 in Waterville, Maine, United States; the son of Bernard Adam Etzel and Elizabeth (Emery) Etzel.
Etzel graduated from Farmington High School in 1964. Four years later he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Tufts University.
Etzel began his career as a teacher at Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel in 1968. Two years later he took a position of a language teacher at Hambakis School. Then in 1974 Alan held the same position at Northrop Corporation and at Josbel Oy in 1985-1987.
Also in 1992, he became a director at Josbel Oy. Eight years later Etzel was appointed a technical writer at Fujitsu. Since 2004 he was a technical writer at CBOSS Corporation.
Etzel was a member of Helsinki International Rotary Club and served as its president from 1992 to 1993.
Etzel enjoyed running and made good use of the forest paths of Helsinki’s Central Park near his home. He ran the Helsinki City Marathon five times.
On April 14, 1984 Alan Etzel married Liisa Kristiina Ruoho. They have a son.
