Casty served as a sergeant in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. He began his career as a publicist at Natural Vision Film Corporation in 1953 and held the position until 1954. In 1956, Casty became a professor of English and Cinema at Santa Monica College. Since 1992 Alan has been a professor emeritus at the same college.

2013On August 10, 1956 Alan Casty married Marilyn McPheeters, with whom he divorced in December 1970. They have three children. On January 7, 1971 he married Jill Herman.
