Erlebacher was born on September 28, 1932 in Ulm, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany; the son of Alfred Samuel Erlebacher and Rosa (Wertheimer) Erlebacher. He came to the United States in 1937.

Erlebacher was born on September 28, 1932 in Ulm, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany; the son of Alfred Samuel Erlebacher and Rosa (Wertheimer) Erlebacher. He came to the United States in 1937.
Erlebacher received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954 and a Master of Arts degree in 1956 from Marquette University. Also in 1965, he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Wisconsin.
Erlebacher began his career as a teacher at Independence High School in 1954 and held it for a year. In 1956, he took the same position at Center High School, where he worked until 1959. Then in 1960, Albert became a teacher at Principal Lone Rock High School.
Also he served as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin from 1962 to 1965. In 1965, Erlebacher was appointed a professor of history at DePaul University. Since 1997 he has been a professor emeritus of history at the same university.
Erlebacher is a member of American Association of the University of Professors, American History Association and Wisconsin Historical Society.
On August 20, 1961 Albert Erlebacher married Dolores Adler. They have three children.
