( About the Book The period termed Modern history, is con...)
About the Book The period termed Modern history, is considered the historiographical time frame that follows post-classical history. The Modern history era can be further broken down into periods: 1) The "early modern" period began around the early 16th century, a period that included the Renaissance, the Age of Discovery, and the Protestant Reformation. 2) The "late modern" period began around the mid-18th century; with notable milestones being the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, and the Russian Revolution. Also in this Book History texts study and interpret the past as it may be understood from written documents. The period before written records is called prehistory. Historians use a narrative to examine and analyse past events, and attempt to objectively determine the patterns of cause and effect. Historical studies are not an end in themselves, but also a way of providing perspective on events taking place in the present. (Excerpt from Louisiana Folk-Tales, Vol. 2: In French Dial...)
Excerpt from Louisiana Folk-Tales, Vol. 2: In French Dialect and English, Translation It is with pleasure that the writer presents to folk-lorists his "Louisiana Folk-Tales." He has devoted several years to collecting his material and preparing it for publication, and he hopes that his book will be considered a useful contribution to the science of Folk-Lore. No attempt was made to make a comparative study of the tales, and they are presented to folk-lorists as material for comparison. Andrew Lang said that the collector should himself eliminate the personal equation while writing his tales and not leave this task to his reader. Such has been the constant aim of the writer and of the persons who kindly assisted him in his work, and this collection is the result of honest and conscientious efforts to give to the public genuine folk-tales. The tales are given first in the Creole dialect, then in a faithful but not literal translation, as it is desirable to preserve the interest of the story. The study of the Creole dialect is of importance and interest, and the tales have been carefully written in Louisiana dialect, in order that the material may be of use to the philologist. In the Appendix are reproduced fourteen stories already published in 1888 in the "Transactions of the Modern Language Association of America," and in the "Journal of American Folk-Lore," to the end that the reader may have in one volume a complete collection of Louisiana Folk-Tales. The writer wishes to acknowledge his obligations and present his thanks to his nieces. Misses Désirée and Marguerite Roman, and to Mr. Zénon De Moruelle, who have assisted him in his collection. One of his most valued assistants has been Mrs. Widow V. Choppin, of St. James Parish, recently deceased. Thanks are also due to the Secretary of The American Folk-Lore Society, for suggestions in the preparation of this work.

educator historian author and civic leader
He was born in St. James Parish, Louisiana, the son of Florent Fortier, of French Breton stock, and Edwige Aime, daughter of a beloved planter.
After his early schooling in New Orleans, Fortier went for some time to the University of Virginia, studied law, then left a banking clerkship to enter the teaching profession.
After a short experience in the New Orleans Boys' High School, he became principal of the preparatory department of the University of Louisiana (later Tulane University).
He studied constantly, specializing in Romance languages under Elliott at Johns Hopkins and in Paris under Passy.
In 1880 he was given the chair of French in the university, in 1894 he became professor of Romance languages, and in 1913 he was made dean of the graduate department.
His devotion to Tulane was unbounded. He studied constantly, specializing in Romance languages under Elliott at Johns Hopkins and in Paris under Passy.
His great interest, however, lay in Creole history and customs, and to this field he contributed Bits of Louisiana Folklore (1888); Louisiana Studies (1894); Louisiana Folk Tales (1895); a History of Louisiana (1904), his masterwork; and an Encyclopedia of Louisiana (1908). In addition to these works, he published Le Chateau de Chambord (1884); Central America and Mexico (1907), written in collaboration with J. R. Ficklen; Gabriel d'Ennerich (1886); and Voyage en Europe (1895).
He also made frequent contributions to the press, to encyclopedias, and to the Comptes Rendus of l'Athenee Louisianais. Fortier was so devoted to his native state that he refused several calls to important universities.

A devout Roman Catholic, he was five times president of the Catholic Winter School, an active member of the St. Vincent Society, and a contributor to the Catholic Encyclopedia.
Believing that conscious effort was necessary to preserve Creole tradition and culture, by painstaking labor and study he paved the way for the scientific study of Louisiana history.
He was a member of the American Folklore Society, of the Modern Language Association, of the Federation de l'Alliance Franeaise.
As a man Fortier was active and energetic; as a writer, straightforward and sincere.
On October 22, 1881, Fortier married Marie Lanauze, daughter of Adolphe Lanauze and Augustine Henriette Ferrand. The first commercial tenant in the Pontalba Buildings was Adolphe Lanauze, a native of France who was a hardware merchant. Today, this shop houses the 1850 Museum gift shop. They had eight children.
