Deüstua is considered one of the ‘founders' of Latin American philosophy. Deeply influenced by the thought of Karl Christian Krause (1781— 1832). Deüstua believed that ‘liberty is the essence of grace'. He applied the concept of creative evolution to aesthetics, arguing that only in aesthetic activity is creative liberty fully expressed because only in this phase of existence is the imagination freed from resistance. Deüstua had a close affinity with the ideas of the Mexican thinker Jose Vasconcelos and, at age 90, wrote a book on his aesthetics.
