AMFITEATROV, Aleksandr was born on December 26, 1862 in Kaluga.
Graduated from Moscow University in law, 1885.
Early 1880’s contributed satirical articles to newpaper Novoye vremya. Toured Italy and Slavic countries as correspondent for Russian newspapers. 1899 co-founder, newspaper Rossiya.
1902 exiled to Minusinsk for satirical article on Tsarist family entitled ’’Messrs Deceivers”. 1900 began publ of Zver' iz bezdny (The Beast from the Abyss), a voluminous work on 1st Century AD. 1905 emigrated to Paris, where he published the journal Krasnoye znamya.
1916, after his return to Russia, helped found newspaper Russkaya volya. 1922 went into emigration.
