Founder, leading member and chief theoretician of the Mir Isskustva (World of Art) group. In his early years, mentor of Diaghilev in art appreciation and later his constant collaborator in different ventures. Greatest achievements are in art history, book illustration and stage design.
One of the most important figures in Russian cultural life during the 1900-1920s. Moved to Paris, 1927. Continued to work as a stage designer and painter.
