Began to publish poetry, 1903. Belonged to many of the circles of the Silver Age of Russian poetry before World War I. Lived in Paris, where he was close to Voloshin, Balmont and other Russian poets. Emigrated from Odessa, 1919.
Moved to Belgium, then Paris and later the USA. Continued to write in the emigre press. Active in the Literaturnyi Fond (aid to Russian writers abroad). Translated many West European poets into Russian.
Made some of the best translations of Rilke.
