One of a new wave of playwrights who appeared in the mid-1970s. Factory worker, then actor in a puppet theatre. His first play The War was written when he was still a student, but staged only recently in Moscow.
Received recognition after his play Red Pro opened in a Moscow theatre. His play Here Fly the Birds was staged at the Student Theatre of Leningrad University. Stars in the Morning Sky was much disliked by the cultural authorities, yet despite strong resistance was shown at several theatres in Moscow, Leningrad and in the provinces.
It also received critical acclaim during the Malyi Theatre’s tour of Britain in 1988.
