Prominent puppet-cinema director. Worked as a journalist, actor and interior designer. Entered the film industry, 1927.
Made over 70 puppet films. His major work was Novyi Gulliver, 1935, in which he used some 1,500 puppets he had made himself. Specialized in adaptations of Russian fairy-tales and stories by foreign writers.
His film Kamennyi Tsvetok received a prize at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival, while Sadko, 1953, was a prize-winner at the Venice Film Festival. Adopted nearly all of Pushkin’s stories for the puppet cinema. Trained a generation of puppeteers.
