1892 graduate Moscow Military College. 1899 graduate General Staff Academy.
During World War 1 served with Intelligence Department, General Staff and Headquarters. Then chief of staff, 10th Army with rank of major-general. After 1917 October Revol sided with the Bolsheviks.
Took part in Brest peace talks. From February 1918 deputy commander, Western Screen. Then chief of staff, White Sea Military district.
From May 1918 chief of staff, Northern Front. November 1918—April 1920 commander, 6th Separate Army (apart from a short interval in May 1919, when he commanded the Eastern Front). 1920-1921 assistant chief of staff, Red Army.
Simultaneously chief, All-Russian Main Staff and member, Higher Military Council. April 1920 took part in peace talks with Finland. March 1921 took part in peace talks with Turkey.
From 1921 taught at military college. Professor, Zhukovskiy Air Force Academy. Wrote numerous research works and memoirs.
From 1948, although retired, worked for Military Research Social, Centr Museum of the Soviet Army.

The emphasis on peaceful coexistence doesn’t mean that the Soviet Union accepted a static world with clear lines. Socialism is inevitable and the "correlations of forces" were moving towards socialism.
