Grew up in Russian Poland, later moved to stanitsa Ust’- Medveditskaia (in 1933 re-named Serafimovich). From 1883-1887, studied at Petersburg University in the physico-mathematical faculty. In 1887, arrested, together with Aleksandr Ulianov (Lenin’s brother).
Exiled to Arkhangelsk province In 1890, returned to the Don, and became close to the SDs. First short story published in 1889. In 1901, met M. Gorkii.
Member of the Sreda literary group, wrote in the populist vein. Contributor to Znanie. In 1917, took part in the Bolshevik revolution.
