Involved in Bolshevik activity in Latvia from 1905. From 1907, a soldier, then officer. Took part in World War I. After the February Revolution 1917, commander of a regiment.
After the October Revolution 1917, served in the Moscow military region. In 1918, fought against White Cossacks near Kamyshin. Joined the Bolshevik Party in 1919.
A commander at the Southern front. From 1919-1920, Commander of the 9th Army fighting General Denikin.
