Ivan Masychev graduated from the Kuibyshev parachute school, the Military Academy of Armored Forces in 1955.
During the Great Patriotic War, Ivan Masychev was engaged in active combat. He was a commander of the motorcycle battalion of the 50th separate motorcycle regiment (3rd Guards Tank Army, 1st Ukrainian Front). In 1980-1984 Ivan Masychev occupied the post of the Chief enlistment officer of the Voronezh Region. In 1984 Ivan Masychev attained a rank of a reserve officer. He lived in Voronezh.
