From 1978 to 1981, he passed training on the basis of SPA "Energy". From February to June 1981 were trained in CTC in the group for flight on DOS "Salyut-7".
From June 1981 to April 28, 1982 passed direct training on the program of the first expedition on DOS "Salyut-7" together with V. Djanibekov (from January 1982 - with V. Lyakhov).
From September 1982 to April 1983 he passed direct training as the flight engineer of the second crew of spacecraft "Soyuz T-8", together with V. Lyakhov and A. Serebrov, (from March 1983 - with V. Lyakhov and V. Savinykh). In May - June 1983 passed training in the maintenance mode in the same program together with V. Lyakhov.
From May 20 to July 10, 1991 he passed training as flight engineer of the first visiting crew of “Mir” with the participation of the representative of Kazakhstan, together with V. Korzun and T. Aubakirov. Training was terminated because of the inclusion of the Kazakhstani cosmonaut in the structure of the Soviet-Austrian crews.

Flight 1 - June 27 - November 23, 1983 as a flight engineer on the spacecraft "Soyuz T-9" and DOS "Salyut-7". During the flight, twice was in the open space of the total duration is 5 hours 44 minutes 15 seconds. The flight duration was 149 days 10 hours 46 minutes. Callsign: "Proton-2".
2 flight - 22 Jul - 29 December 1987 as a flight engineer on the spacecraft "Soyuz TM - 3". Flight duration: 160 days 7 hours 16 minutes 58 seconds. Callsign: “Vityaz-2".
