Fought in 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War. 1899 — 1904 served with Main Staff and was also assistant ed, then chief ed, journal “Voyennyy sbomik" and Minister of War representative on newspaper “Russkiy invalid”. 1905-1906 chief, Main Staff.
1906-1912 assistant Minister of War. 1912-1915 member, State Council. June 1915—March 1916 Minister of War and chairman, Special Defense Council.
1920 member, Special Council under commander in chief of Red Army. 1920 military expert on Soviet deleg negotiating Soviet-Polish peace treaty.
