Alex Traube was born on June 5, 1946, in New York, United States.
Alex Traube received a Master of Arts in Photography from Ohio University in Athens in 1970 and a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Literature from American University in Washington, D.C., in 1968. He studied at the Center of the Eye in Aspen, Colorado (1969 and 1970).
In 1980 Alex Traube lectured at universities, colleges, and art schools in the United States and Canada as well as doing freelance commercial photography. Previously he was employed at the Center for Photographic Studies in Louisville, Kentucky, as associate director and a full-time faculty member from 1971 to 1974.
