Over a period of 1968-1969 he worked as an auto-trucker, a worker at the Uritsk grain reception center (Uritsky village, Kustanai region), in 1969 he worked as a slab layer at the Kamsk Construct Installing Company of the "Sovkhozstroy" trust # 13. Over a period of 1989-1991 he was the head - deputy head of the Kazakh SSR Investigation Department. Since 1991 he was the deputy prosecutor of the Kazakh SSR. In 1994 he moved to Moscow and was appointed Butyrsky Interdistrict Deputy Prosecutor. Since 1995 he worked as the First Deputy Prosecutor of the North-Eastern Administrative District of Moscow.

Since 2001 worked as the head of the Central Department of Justice in Moscow, then the head of the Central Directorate of the Federal Registration Service in Moscow - the main state registrar of Moscow. On the 6th of July, 2006 appointed as the 1st Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, oversees the issues of general supervision in the prosecutor's office
He is married. In 2006 his wife, Irina Ivanovna, was elected a Moscow notary (her husband was the head of the competition committee at that time)
