Alexander Dalzell was born on May 8, 1925, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is the son of Thomas and Jeanie Evelyn (Beattie) Dalzell.
Dalzell received his education at Trinity College in Dublin, attending it from 1943 to 1950. He holds from it his Bachelor of Arts degree, Bachelor of Literature degree and a Master of Arts degree.
Dalzell started his career as an assistant lecturer in classics at the King's College of the University of London in 1951. Two years later, he went to the University of Sheffield, where he was holding the same position for one more year.
In 1954, Dalzell moved to Canada and started his long relationship with Trinity College in Toronto, first as a lecturer and then as a professor in classics. From 1988, he holds the position of professor emeritus in classics at the university, living in Toronto, Ontario.

Dalzell married Isobel Ann Steel on August 21, 1954. The couple has 2 children, Catherine Jane Dalzell Collins and Thomas George Alexander.
