Huxley received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oxford University in 1955. He was given an honorary degrees of Doctor of Letters from Trinity College in 1984 and Queen's University in 1996.
Huxley began his career as a fellow at All Souls College in 1955 and held it for six years. In 1956, he became an assistant director of the British School at Athens. Also George served as a visiting lecturer at Harvard University from 1958 to 1959 and again in 1961-1962. Then in 1962, he was appointed a professor of Greek at Queen’s University, where he worked until 1983.
In 1986, Huxley took a position of the director of the Gennadius Library at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. In addition, since 1989, he has been an honorary professor of Greek at Trinity College. Since 1999 George has also been an honorary professor of the Classical Association of Ireland. In 2003, he was the keynote speaker of the XVI International Congress of Classical Archaeology in Boston.
Huxley was a chairman of the Organizing Committee for the VIII International Congress of Classical Studies in 1984. The same year he was elected as senior vice president of the Federation Internationale des Societes of d’Etudes Classiques. Also George was a vice president at Royal Irish Academy from 1997 to 1998.
On November 27, 1957 George Huxley married Davina Best. They have three daughters.
