The hard punching Povernov could win the German Championships at Heavyweights with 201 lb/91 kg limit in 2000, 2004, 2005 and 2006. At the World Championships 2005 he lost his semi final controversially to eventual winner Alexander Alekseev and won Bronze. At the 2006 European Amateur Boxing Championships he beat Clemente Russo 30:21 but lost to Roman Romanchuk and again won Bronze. At the World Championships 2007 he beat Polish Deontay Wilder conqueror Krzysztof Zimnoch 18:10 but exited early against Italian surprise winner Clemente Russo 5:17.
