Alexander Alekseevich (Andreevich) Shklyarevsky was born on January 21, 1837 in Irkleev village, Poltava Governorate, Russian Empire (now Irkliev, Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine) to a burgher family. His father was a teacher.

Alexander Alekseevich studied at the 1st Kharkiv Gymnasium, but due to the extreme poverty of his parents he was forced to leave the 4th grade. In 1854 he passed the examination for the title of teacher of the parishional school.
Alexander Alekseevich started working as a teacher in the village of Degtyarnoye (now Voronezhskaya Oblast', Russian Fediration) in 1855, then in the city of Pavlovsk and in Voronezh.
Since the beginning of the 1860s he was actively published in local periodicals ("Voronezhsky listok", "Voronezhskiye gubernskiye vedomosti", where since January 1864 he led a theatrical chronicle, "Don", "Voronezh Telegraph"), as well as in many metropolitan newspapers. In 1866 due to illness, suffering from a heart defect, Alexander Alekseevich quit teaching and devoted himself exclusively to literary work. Since 1870 he lived in Saint Petersburg and collaborated in the "Saint Petersburg vedomosti" and other publications.
Alexander Alekseevich died on October 23, 1883 in Saint Petersburg.
