Commissioned First lieutenant, 3d Artillery, United States Army, 1812, promoted captain, 1813. Severely wounded at capture of York, Upper Canada, April 1813. Brevetted major for his defense of Fort Erie, 1814.
Served with Jackson in Seminole campaign, 1818. Occupied Spanish post of St. Mark’s with force of 200 men. Appointed by Jackson as member of court martial which tried and sentenced Robert Ambrister and Alexander Arbuthnot, provost marshall at execution, April 29, 1819.
Served at Fort Gadsen, Detroit, Mackinaw, Columbus, artillery school at Fortress Monroe, Va, 1821-1824. Brevetted lieutenant colonel, 1824. Commissioned major 4th Artillery, 1832.
Brevetted colonel for service in battle at Withlacoochee, Seminole War, 1835. Defended Camp Monroe against surprise Seminole attack, 1837. Transferred to Canadian frontier, 1840-1841.
