Alexander Matveyevich graduated from the Kostroma Theological Seminary (1867), Saint Petersburg Theological Academy (1871).
Alexander Matveyevich Pravdin was an officer of the Holy Synod Chancellery (1871-1874), Secretary of the Theological Consistory in Saratov (1874-1882) and Voronezh (1882-1906). He was a member of the eparchial school Council (since 1884), editor of the official part of the "Voronezh diocesan lists" (since 1886).
His articles of religious and moral content were placed in the magazines "Pastyrskiy sobesednik"(Pastoral Interlocutor) and "Strannik"(Wanderer). He studied the history of the Voronezh Diocese of the XIX century, published documents on administration of the Diocese by Bishop Arseny (Moskvin) (Voronezh diocesan lists, 1890-1896).
Alexander Matveyevich was a member of the Provincial Statistical Committee (since 1891), Voronezh Scientific Archival Commission (since 1900), Chairman of the Central Historical and Archival Commission and editor of the "Voronezhskaya Starina"(Voronezh Antiquity) (1901-1906), where he published 18 articles. Since October 1906, he was the prosecutor of the Georgian-Imereti Synod Office.
