Owned Grand Union Hotel, a retail store at Saratoga Springs, New York, Metropolitan Hotel, Globe Theatre, Niblo’s Garden (New York City).
Contributed to charities. Sent shipload of provisions to Ireland during famine of 1847.
Purchased Hempstead Plains on Long Island for which he built “model town” of Garden City. Appointed secretary treasury, 1869, but business holdings barred him from holding the office.
