Alexandra Alekseevna Venkstern was born on October 28, 1843, Oryol Oblast, Russian Federation. She was born in a noble family; her father is a descendant of a Swedish officer in Russian service.
In October 1855 Alexandra Alekseevna settled in the family of her sister E.A. Zamyatina in Ryazan, where she spent her school years.
Alexandra Alekseevna began to write under the influence of N.D Khvoshchinskaya, who helped her with the first literature experiments. The first story of Lilies of the valley was published in Gazeta A. Gattsuka (1881). Her regular literature activity began with the prose Involuntary revenge (1885), revealing the author’s desire for psychological sharpness of the plot.
In the works of Alexandra Alekseevna where the lack of visual tools was replaced by plot effects (death, suicide, naturalistic description of a serious illness), it was highlighted, with a several dramatically tense, psychologically accurate stories and short stories: prose The story of my sister (1890), From the diary of Natalya Sergeevna (1892). L. N. Tolstoy, who met her in 1889, wrote in a letter to her (July 28, 1901): "I always read your clever, sincere and talented works with great pleasure."
