Education
He had his first contact with fashion through his mother, Regina, at the age of ten, when she gave him basic lessons of modelling and sewing at Mr. Herchcovitch's request. She started to wear the clothes he made in parties, which led him to sell his collections to friends. In his teen years, Alexandre Herchcovitch used to go to the alternative clubs of São Paulo night life, but at the same time he studied at a Religious Zionist Orthodox Jewish school. The conflicting ideologies continue to have a strong influence in the designer’s work.
Career
Alexandre Herchcovitch is a designer who is able to transform classic into modern, simple into glamourous, easy into complex. His designs have been sent down the runways of New York, Paris, London and Sao Paulo Fashion Weeks. Changing the way the world thinks about Brazilian fashion, coupled with his new Japanese store and concessions in New York, Mr. Herchcovitch is fast becoming a big and serious name in the fashion world.
In 1998, he created a designer jeans line and began exporting to London and New York. After a brief transition through the English fashion calendar, he finally arrives in Paris, where he shows his collections as the only Brazilian designer member of the Fashion Trade Union Association.
Mr. Herchcovitch serves in a director role at Senac Fashion Design University Center in Brazil. Alexandre Herchcovitch launched his very first international store in Japan. In 2007, he has served as creative director to the brand of womenswear, Cori. He has designed bedroom and bathroom collections for Zelo, as well as designed shoe wear for Melissa sandals, and recently was named creative director for swimwear label Rosa. Mr. Herchcovitch is the only Brazilian designer member of the Fashion Trade Union Association.
Selected products of his are sold in the United States, Canada, England, France, Spain and Australia. His first store in Tokyo has recently opened. Alexandre Herchcovitch chose Tokyo where a good part of his collections are purchased and where he has become somewhat of a fashion guru. The 1,076 sq ft (100.0 m2) store, which sits in the hip Daikanyama district carries his men's, women's and denim collections and is operated in partnership with Japanese fashion distributor and retailer H.P. France.
