Alexandria Russell Bowen was born in 1937, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. She was one of four children in the family.
Bowen attended Summit school in St. Paul (now St. Paul Academy) and Wellesley College where she majored in music (violin, piano). She also obtained a Master of Arts degree from the University of Michigan.
Before writing, Bowen took on jobs that would expand her mind, including working for a paleoentomologist, and in Harvard University’s admissions office. She worked for more than a year in a hospital records department in England. She also served a stint as the managing editor of the magazine Behavioral Science.
Andy Bowen is best known as a writer of books for children. 1997Bowen was a member of the Midwest Authors Association and Children’s Reading Round Table.
Bowen loved adventure. She canoed rivers from the Yukon in Canada to the Zambezi in Zambia. She rafted Colorado and went on sailing trips in the Alaskan inland waterway. She and her husband went on a number of hiking trips in Great Britain, Ireland, and France. Bowen loved choral music, and while in England, sang in the King's College Choir in Cambridge. Bowen with her husband both also sang in the Bach Society and were charter members of the Minnesota Chorale. Bowen's creative talents extended beyond music to photography and watercolour painting. Bowen was also a superb cook; she rarely followed a recipe, improvising as she went, and the results were glorious.
Bowen married Robert Bowen in 1968. The couple had two children, Sarah and Hilary.
