Academy of Belle Arte
Alexandru Phoebus was born in 1899, in Bucharest, Bucuresti, Romania.
Alexander enrolled at the Academy of Belle Arte in 1918.
Influenced by the 1920s visit to the Baia Mare Center, together with Honoriu Creţulescu, Horia Igiroşeanu, and others, Alexander Phoebus established the Belle Arte Association, a union of students that formed the basis of the future Free Academies of Art. Thus, Phoebus was the recipient of some corrections from Steriadi, Petrascu or Verona, some of the teachers who came to help their younger colleagues.
In the summers spent at the Colonia in Baia Mare in the mid-decade, the artist managed to create his own plastic frame influenced both by outdoor painting and by the theories that emerged from French modernity. Derain has borrowed Phoebus's way of observing and rendering nature, in a well-known manner, with economics, in an essence that was meant to offer expressiveness.
After his debut in Bucharest, at the 1925 Official Salon, Phoebus tried to orientate himself and place himself on a niche that would fit him. The study of form, construction, and thematic vision brought him closer to the art of Şirato in the second half of the decade, with the social compositions of the artist being related to Phoebus's work. The neighborhood of Şirato favored the painter's affective association with the Caesan constructivism, which grew after the Parisian stay. Mature Phoebus stabilized its compositional components from decade Four when the artist understood the plastic hierarchy that brought success. The first step was to look for the drawing, and then for its value.
In 1931, Alexander Phoebus took part in the formation of the "Our Group" association, being a member of the wave of young artists, including Tache Papatriandafil, Margareta Sterian, Paul Miracovici, Aurel Kessler, and others. The artist died in 1954 in Bucharest. Currently, "Alexander Phoebus Collection" is held at the Museum of Art Collections in Bucharest.
Alexandru Phoebus adhered to the artistic traditions of Impressionism and Social Realism.
