Alexey Pokrovsky's family influenced his future career. Following his father, he chose a medical career. He studied in the Voronezh University at the Faculty of Chemistry. As a university student, Alexey Pokrovsky led an intensive scientific work, defended his thesis of Biological Sciences simultaneously with a diploma of a doctor.
From 1940 until his death the scientific activity of Alexey Pokrovsky was connected with Moscow. He worked in a number of research institutes in Moscow. From 1952 to 1976 he held the position of Professor of the Department of biochemistry of the 1st and 2nd Moscow medical Institute, at the same time from 1961 to 1976 he held the position of Director and head of the laboratory of Enzymology of the Institute of nutrition of the USSR.
Pokrovsky was the editor-in-chief of the Questions of Food magazine. Member of the Committee on the Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR. A.Pokrovsky was the adviser of the International organization at the UN for a problem of protein, the consultant of WHO, the editor of the first International encyclopedia on problems of food.
Pokrovsky's purposefulness, asceticism and exactingness were combined with his attention to people, benevolence, and ability to sympathize. He was always ready to come to the rescue, responded to requests, and often became the initiator of joint affairs.
