Alexey Matveevich Polivanov graduated from high school in the city of Maloyaroslavets, Kaluga Region (1940) and Leningrad Institute of Civil Engineering (1949).
In 1950-1972 Alexey Polivanov served as a military civil engineer (Leningrad, Ural, Moscow military districts). From 1972, he was engaged in the search for evidence supporting the hypothesis of his uncle, N.N. Polivanov, according to which the battle of the troops of Prince Igor Svyatoslavovich with the Polovtsy (May 11-12, 1185) took place in the territory of the modern city of Rossosh, Voronezh Region.
Three times (1976–1978) participated in field archaeological expeditions in the vicinity of Rossosh, along the banks of the Black Kalitva River, the Olhovatka River, and the Rossosh River. In December 1998, spoke at a meeting of Rossoshansky ethnographers. In June 2003, he visited Rossosh to study new archaeological finds.
Alexey Polivanov took an active part in the restoration of the church in the village of Nadezhdino. It was he who put at the disposal of the restorers the photo of 1887, depicting the true image of the church. All the last years Polivanov fought for the preservation of another monument of the manor "Nadezhdino" - a rural school, built by his grandfather N.P. Polivanov in the 80s of the XIX century.
Member of the board of the society “Heritage of the Decembrists” at the Russian Culture Foundation, chairman of the public association “Nadezhdino Manor”, public inspector of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments.
